The First Sculpture of a Woman Wearing a Hijab Will Be Unveiled in England in October
The hero of this story is a renowned British sculptor Luke Perry, known for monumental sculptures which celebrate underrepresented communities, and the heritage of the Industrial Revolution.
For months he was working on a monumental statue dubbed “Strength of the Hijab” which is to be reveled soon. It was commissioned by Legacy West Midlands, a charity that honors the heritage of post-war migrants in England.
It is believed that this statue / sculpture is the first of its kind in the world and its made in honor of all the women who wear hijabs.
Thethe steel-made statue by Luke Perry will be installed in the Smethwick area of Birmingham in October. The location of where it’s going is be installed is a place where a humongous part of the community that is from the Islamic faith.
The sculpture is five metres tall and weighs around a tonner.
Regarding his idea on making this unique sculpture and its significance for the community, the artist said:
“The Strength of the Hijab is a piece which represents women who wear hijabs of the Islamic faith, and it’s really there because it’s such an underrepresented part of our community, but such an important one. They wear the hijab as part of their community, and it is really underrepresented. It’s something which people feel very strongly about, identify with, and they feel happy about and comfortable with.”
